History of the Sheep Dog Trials

The Kingston Sheep Dog Trials began on a private farm in the former Pittsburgh Township near Kingston, and became an established public event when the Township took it over as part of its bi-centennial celebrations in 1988. From its humble beginnings with a handful of competitors and fewer spectators, it now attracts 7000 people and many of the world's top trials handlers and dogs. The trial has developed a reputation for its high calibre level of competition throughout the trialing circuits across the nation, and overseas.
It is for this reason that Kingston has been chosen to host the 2012 Canadian National Championships, a qualifier for the North American Championships in conjunction with the 25th anniversary celebrations. This is the fourth time Kingston has been selected to host this prestigious event.
We extend kudos and thanks to our local committee members and volunteers for helping to put Kingston and the Kingston Sheep Dog Trials, on the international map!
